Combining Light
SUNLIGHT PLUS FLASH EQUALS DRAMA
The natural world has a charm that few will dispute. Even when the presence of man intrudes, like this cornfield in the foreground, the raw beauty of nature is only heightened.
Recording the scene with a digital camera is a simple matter. Just set the camera to Program mode, point and shoot, and you will undoubtedly end up with a memorable moment captured on the sensor. I did this, and while the image turned out fine, it didn’t have the pop I wanted. The solution was to combine natural light with artificial light. I composed the picture as before, but this time made use of the on-camera flash to illuminate the corn stalks. The results were almost three-dimensional: corn stalks, tree, and sky. —WTD
