Collecting Props that Inspire

AN EXCUSE TO HOARD

Props or “property” as they are called on Hollywood movie lots can set the mood, help to tell the story, or suggest a time period for your images. Some people are able to make a full-time career out of collecting and purchasing items for photo shoots. These people are hired by photographers and producers to conjure up spectacular props, from vintage cars to exotic animals. The search and collection of props for future inspiration of photo shoots is a must for every photographer.

Some cities set up business recycling centers where a business can donate odds and ends, ranging from office supplies and furniture to retail display items. Artists can purchase a yearly membership to shop at these facilities. The polystyrene balls on strands of wire in this shot were picked up from such a place and inspired the image after seeing them hung on a background stand in the studio. —MR
