Being Patient

BALLET WARMUP

This is backstage at the Smuin Ballet in San Francisco. Just before each performance, the dancers put on shoes, warm up, and rehearse their pieces one last time. As I was taking photos of a dancer adjusting her shoe, another inadvertently jumped into my background. I decided to reframe the picture to include both dancers in order to give a better feel for the activity behind the curtains. I had to be patient and wait for the dancer in the background to work her way into the shot doing something visually exciting. —TH
