Image DAY 145 PORTRAITS

Black and White

CATHRYN HARRISON, ACTRESS

Black and white photography is still my first love, and this simple portrait from a shoot that Cathryn had commissioned me to do exemplifies it succinctly. She needed a head shot, but we ended up producing something much more than that, and this image was my favorite. Her beautiful long, blond hair contrasts brilliantly against the black clothing and background that had become my signature style early on in my photography career. Without color, your eye is drawn to form in photography, and the play between light and dark. The camera framing and composition become even more important without the distraction of color.

Even in these days of digital photography, you can still produce beautiful black and white images, and it’s so much easier than shooting film and processing. Now you can see your images in color instantly, and then at the mere click of a mouse in your software, it’s black and white. –SA

FUN FACT

When a shot is not working, convert it to black and white. That way, your eye can really focus on the form and composition, and you can fix it.
