Understanding PowerPoint's Multiple Language Features
Office 2000, including PowerPoint, includes many new features that simplify creating multilingual documents and presentations. Some examples of these features are
A single worldwide executable This enables you to use one version of the application in multiple languages including most European, Asian, and bi-directional languages such as Arabic and Hebrew.
Language AutoDetect PowerPoint automatically detects the language you're using based on the keyboard and applies the appropriate proofing tools.
Multiple language editing PowerPoint 2000 enables the use of multiple languages in a single document, including the capability to check spelling and apply special formatting in the languages you enable.
Text editing in right-to-left languages If your system supports right-to-left languages, such as Arabic or Hebrew, PowerPoint displays these languages correctly and enables editing.
Understanding the MultiLanguage Pack
The Microsoft MultiLanguage Pack for Office 2000 provides user interfaces and online help for more than 25 languages. The MultiLanguage Pack also includes the Microsoft Proofing Tool Kit, which provides fonts, templates, and spelling/grammar checkers for 37 languages. Additionally, this kit includes IMEs required for Asian languages. An IME is an Input Method Editor, which enables you to create documents and presentations in Asian languages by translating what you type into Asian characters.
The MultiLanguage Pack comes on a separate CD—not the one you use to install Office 2000. Install the Language Pack CD if you want to use multiple languages in PowerPoint.
Caution
Even if you install the MultiLanguage Pack to enable multilingual features in Office 2000, you still need to verify that your system supports the language you want to use. Windows NT 5 is the best platform for extensive multilingual use—it supports all languages. If you use Windows 95, 98, or NT 4, you may need the corresponding language version of this software for full support of languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Arabic, or Hebrew.
