Managing user permissions

In addition to managing the actual user profiles and audience settings, you can also edit the permissions for the User Profile service itself. There are three permissions that can be managed:

  • Create Personal Site
  • Follow People and Edit Profile
  • Use Tags and Notes

The most popular change to make on this page is for the Create Personal Site permission. Modifying this setting allows you to determine who can self-provision OneDrive for Business sites. Updating this permission does not affect OneDrive for Business Sites that have already been created. To manage who can create OneDrive for Business sites, follow these steps:

  1. Launch the User Profile Service application from the classic SharePoint admin page.
  2. Under People, select Manage User Permissions.
  3. In the people picker box, enter a username or group and click Add:

  1. Select the group from the list and then scroll to the bottom of the window.
  2. Select or deselect the Create Personal Site checkbox, if necessary. Then, click OK:

After the permissions changes to the User Profile Service take effect, users who haven't logged into OneDrive for Business (either the web or client application) yet will inherit the new settings. If you change the permissions later to allow a user who has previously been prevented from creating a personal site, SharePoint Online will automatically provision the site the next time they attempt to access the service.
