Local navigation items (such as Home, Conversations, and Documents) are the elements that show up on every page of your sites. The local navigation is typically referred to as the Quick Launch and is located on the left side of the page of sites that use the Team Site template, as shown in the following screenshot:

As the next diagram shows, sites created using the Communications Site template have local navigation displayed across the top of the page:
