Inviting a new user to sign up

In the previous recipe, Creating a new user, we looked at how JIRA administrators can manually create a new user account. This process requires the administrator to fill in all the user information, including the username and password. Another option is to invite the users to sign up and create their accounts on their own.

Getting ready

Since we will be sending out invitation e-mails to users, we need to make sure JIRA has been configured with an outgoing mail server. We also need to have a valid e-mail address for each of the users we want to invite. When the user signs up with the invitation, the account will be created with the same e-mail.

How to do it…

Proceed with the following steps to invite users to sign up and create their own accounts:

  1. Navigate to Administration | User Management | Users.
  2. Click on the Invite Users button.
  3. Enter the e-mail addresses for people you want to invite. You can invite more than one person by entering multiple e-mail addresses separated by a comma.
  4. Click on the Send button to send out invitation e-mails, as shown in the following screenshot:

How it works…

JIRA will send out an invitation e-mail to each invited user, which is similar to the one shown in the following screenshot. The e-mail will contain the Sign Up link, which will expire after seven days. If the invited user has not signed up within the time period, a new invitation needs to be sent.
