Mobile push notifications

As with email and text notifications, mobile push messages to iOS and Android devices are also supported with SNS. This is a really neat feature that can be used to do the following:

  • Communicate messages about updates, changes, and new features for your mobile applications
  • Communicate information about services offered in a certain geographical area
  • Target a certain audience that will likely respond positively to the notification

One example would be a mobile application offering information about pop-up restaurants and street vendor locations to users. Due to the fact that street vendors cannot always sell their food at the same spot, the application would track the vendor locations. The vendor locations would be shown to users when they open the application.

An added feature of the application could allow the user to select their favorite food trucks. The application could match the user locations to the vendor locations, and then notify the users of their favorite food truck location when the vendor is in roughly the same area. The user could also request to be notified of all the vendors in their area at lunchtime, which would let them choose their lunch much more easily than searching all the vendors or phoning to find their locations.
