The simplest way to perform updates is by taking all instances running the current version out of service and updating them with new instances. This is the cheapest way as the size of your environment doesn't increase during this type of update and it is efficient when unpredictable behavior can occur while running multiple versions of the application in the same autoscaling group. The drawback of all at once is that the application will be unavailable while the update is being performed.
