Volume web console

To manage the volumes that we have created, we can look at the EC2 Management Console and select Volumes from the Elastic Block Store section in the menu. Here, we are able to see all of the volumes that we have created and manage their properties. We can also control the attachment of each volume to instances as we desire and we can also see a quick overview of the status of the volume. The status is derived from the automated status checks that AWS performs on the volume backends every 5 minutes, and the status can be any of the following:

  • okay: The volume is operational and available for use
  • warning: The volume is experiencing degraded performance due to an action or operation being performed against it, for instance creating a snapshot during high usage of the volume
  • impaired: The volume is severely impacted in performance or is not available due to a failure in the backend of the EBS environment
  • insufficient-data: This usually means that not enough health checks, have been performed to determine the state of the volume

The following is an example of the volume web console, and the data being displayed is for a 1 GB volume. If you would like to create a volume and attach it to a running instance, you can click the Create Volume button:
