Regional Edge Cache

In 2016, AWS also introduced Regional Edge Caches. These sit between regions and the Edge Locations and have the ability to cache even more information than the Edge Locations themselves. For example, when a user is connecting to a CloudFront service sitting in an Edge Location and the requested data has expired in the cache, the content can be looked up in the Regional Edge Cache and delivered much more quickly than if it was requested from the origin server. This means that the request will only be served from the origin in case the data is not present in either the Edge Location or the Regional Edge Cache. This functionality is automatically enabled for all the services that run in the Edge Locations listed previously.
