S3 Infrequent Access (IA) has the same characteristics as the S3 Standard tier, delivering high performance, low latency, and high durability, but is designed to provide a lower cost per GB of storage and a higher price per request for storage retrieval. The objects stored in S3 IA are retrievable directly, as with S3 Standard, but the storage system is designed for cold data that is unlikely to be accessed but should be deliverable with the same performance as the data in S3 Standard. This cold data storage facility allows us to take data from S3 and store it in a more efficient manner. Life cycling is also integrated into S3 IA, as we can define the data within IA to be life cycled off to Glacier once it is no longer needed to be accessible and ready for archiving, perhaps when it is 90 days old.
