Working with the Route 53 Domain Name System

On the modern internet, one types in a name of a website and almost instantly the content is presented via the browser. This feature of the internet is often taken for granted both by regular users and by IT professionals, since it is considered a given. In the background, the Domain Name System (DNS) makes sure this feature is available and has simplified the way we access the internet since the 1980s. But the traditional DNS system has its own drawbacks and limitations, which is why AWS set out to modernize the way we deploy, manage, and deliver DNS services by building the Route 53 system.

The following topics will be covered in this chapter:

  • Introduction to Route 53
  • Route 53 supported DNS resource record types
  • Registering a domain and creating a zone
  • Routing policies
  • Health checking
  • Best practices
