Sean and Lucy Sheridan both have a love of image-making and some interesting iPhone apps that include the concepts of time and place. They share their thoughts and techniques for making their personal art on the iPhone.

Sean Sheridan is a photographer and a gaffer/lighting director in the motion picture industry. Sean has been publishing his photographs on the web since 2002 on his personal website and on various photo-sharing networks.

One of my favorite apps is “ToyCamera”, used here with an image taken of a spoon in a French café at night. The way “ToyCamera” renders the highlights, crushes the blacks, and reflects the existing color balance really adds to the sense of “place” in this photo.

“QuadCamera” lets you capture four pictures into a grid within a short period of time. You’re forced to visualize your four exposures into a final composition on the spot, although the app allows you to control the length of the delay between exposures to up to thirty seconds.

“QuadCamera” applies vignettes in contrast to the corners of each of the individual pictures, which creates a mysterious framing device. It introduces the fourth dimension, time, to the artwork and, when successful, manages to capture the essence of a place, to depict place in an exceptional way.

The app “ToyCamera” creates effects in a random way, which gives you a surprise every time you take a picture, not unlike the Lomo or Holga style of photography with the instant gratification of a Polaroid. It’s fun and interactive. Here, “ToyCamera” was used to crop the image and add a vignette, helping to isolate and feature our subject.
