It's very important to know when the issue you are working on gets updated especially if it gets updated by a customer. So in this topic, we will review howto make sure that you will receive notifications about updates.

Redmine comes with e-mail notifications support, which can be enabled by users on a per-user and per-object basis using the "watching" mechanism. Thus, to be notified about changes made in an issue you need to open the issue page and click on the Watch link in the issue contextual menu which can be found at the top- and bottom-right corners.

If it was you who created the issue, it is assigned to you or if you were the previous assignee of the issue, you will already get updates about changes in this issue (in this case whether you will receive notifications depends on your settings in the user profile, which will be reviewed in Chapter 9, Personalization).

To be able to watch issues, you need to register in Redmine first. Luckily Redmine provides a way to follow changes in an issue without watching it. You can subscribe to the Atom feed of the issue. The corresponding Atom link can be found at the bottom-right hand corner of the issue page.

The Atom feed is also available for the issues list. Using this feed you can get information about new issues in a project.

While you can't "watch" new issues, you can still configure e-mail notifications about new issues to be sent to you. To do this, go to your profile using the My account link in the top-right menu. Under the Email notifications, select the For any event on the selected projects only option and select the projects you want to get notifications about the new issues for. But note that in this case you will be notified about any changes made to projects and not only new issues.
