Consequences of having low self-awareness

In psychology we use the term blind spots when referring to a lack of, or very low emotional self-awareness. At this moment, you already understand how important it is to have and improve this competence. However, it is important to learn some of the worst consequences of having a very low emotional self-awareness, so you can be more motivated to improve yours. For instance:

  • You don't know what your passions in life are, thus you feel bad and lost in life.
  • You blame others or external factors for your bad luck and failures, whether in the workplace or in your life.
  • You sound sarcastic and snide when congratulating your teammate for his new position as Team Manager, instead of sounding happy and proud. Deep inside you are envious of your colleague--but you are not aware of it. It's difficult to build trust and bonds when we sound sarcastic and snide. Remember, it's a blind spot because you cannot see it but others can. You may not understand how people are perceiving you but others may perceive changes in your emotions, even if you don't. And they will react to you accordingly.
  • Your lack of social skills and empathy make you hurt your colleagues, behave in a negative way in meetings, and undermine or disagree with every one without you realizing it, and this annihilates your chances of getting promoted or winning that new project you dream about. Thus, you are not bringing value to the company and you damage teamwork, partnerships, and stakeholder relationships.
