The red flags of burnout

The red flags or signs of a burnout at first are subtle, but when we have a good emotional awareness we can immediately know that something is wrong with us and that we need to address the problems. If you pay attention and act to reduce your stress, you can prevent a major breakdown. If you ignore them, you will eventually burn out. The main symptoms of burnout can be spotted in three areas: emotional, behaviors, and in our body:

  • Emotional red flags of burnout:
    • Feeling alone in the world
    • Feeling hopeless, helpless, trapped, defeated
    • Becoming cynical with a negative outlook
    • Lack of motivation, satisfaction, and purpose
    • Sense of failure and self-doubt
  • Behavior red flags of burnout:
    • Choosing to be isolated from other people
    • Resorting to addictive substances, such as alcohol, drugs, and excessive food
    • Withdrawing from responsibilities, coming late to work and leaving early
    • Procrastination
    • Blaming others for your frustrations
  • Physical red flags of burnout:
    • Constant headaches
    • Feeling drained all the time
    • Lack of appetite or uncontrollable appetite
    • Poor sleep, despite constant fatigue
    • Being sick frequently, due to lower immunity
    • Muscle pain due to stress, especially in the back
