Strategies to enhance your achievement orientation

Achievement orientation is the drive to meet internal standards of excellence.

Achievement orientation is the ability to have the drive and passion to accomplish goals, excel, and be successful. A professional with a growth mindset and performance-oriented mindset has a strong emotional self-regulation, high standards, and looks to overcome any circumstance in a positive manner. They have a positive attitude, never give up, and encourage others to do the same. They take ownership of their mistakes; therefore, they are always looking to improve. They ask for help when they need it and reward themselves for achieving the goal, keeping their pride from getting in the way of their actions, and delaying gratification when necessary. To build or enhance your achievement orientation skills, consistently practice the following:

  • Take personal responsibility for your success: Failure-avoiding individuals view success as dependent on available resources and situational constraints (for example, the task is too hard, or the marker was biased). Initiative, effort, and persistence are key determinants of success.
  • Enjoy demanding tasks: Anything worthwhile is difficult. Achievement striving is enjoyable. Associate effort on demanding tasks with dedication, concentration, commitment, and involvement.
  • Value hard work: Give value to achievement striving, in and of itself.
  • Improve your skills: Performance on demanding tasks can be improved with practice, training, coaching, and dedication to learning.
  • Be persistent: Continued effort and commitment will overcome initial obstacles or failures. Don't assume that you cannot do something until you have tried it. Trying it three times and giving up is for losers. Try it 3,000 times if necessary, review your data, ask for help, but keep trying until you make it. If you are going through hell, keep going with a smile.
