Guidelines to better managing introverts

Sadly, work environments do not always support the introvert's style and this can impact on their productivity and effectiveness. When this occurs, it can produce a range of emotional responses, which is why developing more emotional intelligence at work can help introverts. There are so many situations such as noise, the talking, the constant interruptions, and so on that make it difficult for introverts to concentrate and think things through.

Yet introverts are people who are skilled at thinking things through and working steadfastly on tasks and through problems.

  • Time to think: If one of your colleagues or manager needs an important decision from you, ask them for time to think, for example, you might say, "I need to think this over, can I get back to you in half an hour?" or "This is an important decision, I need to gather all the facts and get back to you tomorrow, if that is ok with you?" This strategy can help you feel less pressurized.
  • Written information: Introverts like to read things and think them over. So, if you are an introvert, ask for written information before giving your input. If you are the manager of the introvert, provide written information and time before asking for their input. For instance, if you are preparing to brainstorm or preparing for a meeting where the input of your introvert will be required, send them the agenda of the meeting two days in advance.
  • Speak louder: Introverts tend to speak more quietly than extroverts; thus, they may not be heard or be disregarded during a meeting or a brainstorming session. If you need to get your point across at a meeting, for example, you may need to temporarily raise the volume of your voice. Practice at home in front of a mirror. This is also one of the ways of practicing and improving your emotional intelligence.
  • I don't know: If you anticipate difficult questions in a presentation and are feeling anxious about thinking on your feet, then you can say, "I don't know the answer right now. I will personally e-mail you the information as soon as I am back in the office and analyze the information." No one loses face and you can feel more confident in handling any question.

We can summarize the preceding points as shown in the following figure:
