The ESTJ personality type

ESTJs are strong believers in the rule of law and authority. They are the kind of leader that leads by example, demonstrating dedication and purposeful honesty. They reject laziness and cheating, especially in the workplace. ESTJs live in a world of clear, verifiable facts, where the security of their data means that even against hefty resistance, they stick to their principles and push a vision of what is and is not acceptable. ESTJ don't engage in empty talk, they love challenging projects, improving action plans and sorting details, making even the most difficult tasks seem easy and approachable.

Nevertheless, ESTJs don't work alone, and they expect their colleagues or subordinates to reciprocate their work ethics and trustworthiness. ESTJs fulfil their promises, and if partners or subordinates jeopardize them through incompetence or laziness, or are dishonest, they do not hesitate to show their fury. This can earn them a reputation for inflexibility, but it's not because ESTJs are arbitrarily stubborn, but because they truly believe that these values are what makes the society work. The main challenge for ESTJs is to recognize that not everyone follows the same path or contributes in the same way:

ESTJ - Strenghts and Weaknesses

In the workplace, ESTJs whether subordinates, colleagues, or managers, generate order, follow the rules, and work to guarantee that their work and the work of those around them is accomplished to the highest standards. Thus, sparing and dodging responsibilities are the quickest ways to lose an ESTJ's respect. Let's learn with the help of the following chart, the main traits of the ENTJ at work as an employee, subordinate, and manager:

ESTJ at the workplace

Emotional intelligence-wise, ESTJs are confident, realistic in their own abilities and competencies and very disciplined in several areas of their lives, though, ESTJs need to take actions to improve their emotional intelligence in the following areas:

  • Emotional self-awareness and self-management: For ESTJs, there is no room for emotional interference, either from themselves or from those working with them, only the plan is important and emotions have no place in business. This is a direct consequence of their lack of, or very low emotional self-awareness. To improve this competency, ESTJs should actively assess emotional situations or feelings that are triggered in specific situations, so that they can manage their emotional response accordingly. Being more open and flexible with their own feelings, ideas, and views will also help them improve this emotional intelligence competency.
  • Social awareness and social skills: The very strict adherence to the organization's plans, goals, and objectives often makes them lack social awareness and social skills causing troubles in a team that does not share the same rigid values and view point. Thus, a great number of ESTJs prefer to work alone, because they feel intimidated by the emotional situations that could arise in the team and the inherent consequences in the outcome of their work. For this reason, ENTJs don't appear to care about making a good first impression (or second or third), focusing only on the outcome of the work. However, ESTJs need the attention of others to provide them with the feedback they need on their accomplishments, otherwise they begin to feel unappreciated. For the sake of the strength of their relationships, ESTJs should start to openly and intentionally show sympathy and empathy toward their colleagues. If ESTJs improve their social awareness and social skills making their peers' emotional wellbeing a priority, they will in turn enhance their own emotional intelligence and become more welcoming, sympathetic, and agreeable to work with.
