Values

Value statement is a belief of an individual or group in which they have emotionally invested. In an organization, it is important that this statement is written and easily available to everyone. Why? Because, these statements become the deeply ingrained principles and fabric that guide employee behavior, company decisions, and actions. Without a statement, the company will lack soul. It is through the value statement that employees and key stakeholders learn what principles they need to embody, what the organization stands for, how its products contribute to the world, and so on. They are true reflections of what the company believes and what management and employees are willing to live by. However these statements don´t need to be boring endless pages with the most well-researched values. Use your soul, your heart, and your creativity to write your value statement.

One of my favorite value statements is from a company that builds teddy bears and they truly embodied bear-ism throughout the company, as shown in the following figure. Their value statement is creative, simple, and immediately builds trust, brings people together, and unifies the entire organization.

Core value statement from the Build-a-Bear, Inc.

The most important requirement is that your values bring people together and unifies the organization.
