The Components tab is where project administrators can manage the components for their projects. Components can be thought of as subsections that make up the full project. In a business project, components can be various business functions or operations that need to be completed. As shown in the following screenshot, there are three components configured in the current project:
Components are project specific in Jira. This means that components from one project cannot be used in a different project. This also allows each project to maintain its own sets of components. A component has four pieces of information, as shown in the following table:
Field | Description |
Name | This is a unique name for the component. |
Description | This is an optional description to offer more explanation as to what the component is for. |
Lead | This is an optional field where you can select a single user as the lead for the component. For example, in a software project, this can be the main developer for the component. |
Default assignee | This tells Jira when an issue is created without the assignee being selected, and if the issue has a component, then Jira will auto-assign the issue to the selected default assignee. |
