Setting up your own profile

One of the first things you will want to do is to add your own information to your portfolio and to make it feel like you own it. In this section, you will see how to do just that. For the following examples, we will be working with Janet Norman of PI Inc., showing you how she has configured her own profile. Why not set up your own profile in the demonstration site as you work through the examples? Let's start by looking at profile information.

Profile information

Later you will set up your own profile page — showing yourself and your knowledge off to others in an attractively personalized way. However, before you do that, you need to add some profile information. Your profile information is the first example that you will see of an artefact (piece of content or stuff, if you remember?) that you can add to Mahara.

You are now going to set up some profile information, from which you can go on to select repeatedly, and use again and again within your ePortfolio. You will look at three types of profile information — your profile, profile pictures, and your résumé.

Editing your profile

Let's see how to edit your profile. Any information you enter into your profile is private from everyone (except for the site administrators). You will get to choose who can view what, later on in the Mahara process.

Tip

Site administrators can masquerade

Site administrators are the only other members of a Mahara site who are able to access your private profile information without you deciding to share it. That is because they have the power to masquerade, whereby they are able to log in as your user and see your whole portfolio the same as you can when you are logged in.
