Time for action — editing your page layout

You can follow these next steps for editing your page layout:

  1. To add/remove columns from your page, click on the top tab Edit layout:

  2. You will now see a screen that shows you a visual representation of all the options that you have for editing your page. You will notice that you can select between 1 column to 5 columns. Scroll down the page and decide how many columns you would like to use. Then, each column has a number of possible layouts controlling the size of the columns. These typically involve a choice between equal widths or larger left, right, and central columns. Choose the layout that suits you. On looking at the options for 4 columns, Punam decided she would like to have Equal widths and so ticked the appropriate option:

  3. And that's all there is to it — once you've selected your layout, click on the Save button at the bottom of the page.
  4. Punam's page now adjusts to look like the following screenshot, with one extra column to the right:

What just happened?

You have just changed the layout of your page by adding an extra column.

How many columns you add to your page depends on the content you want to add — with there being a maximum of five to choose from. Punam has a clear idea about the kind of information she wants to put in each column. You may decide that you want your page to be simpler and choose only two columns. This may be important if you are just showing images, for example, and you want them to be as big as possible.

You also saw in the Time for action — editing your page layout section that you may choose to have large center columns in your page. This is what Punam's page would have looked like with larger center columns:

Notice how the left-hand column is now squashed to be smaller than the two center ones. This could be useful, for example, if you would like the main information in the center with small images or web links in the side columns.

Now that you've added some content and learned how to rearrange it the way you want to, it's time to give your page some details. You might have noticed earlier when you viewed your page that by default it is called Untitled, which isn't very descriptive of anything, so let's change that...
