Time for action — determine multiple intelligences and display them

Let's see how you can determine your multiple intelligences by using the My Learning artefact:

  1. Log in to the http://foliofor.me website, if you have set up an account, or log in to your own Mahara, if My Learning is installed.
  2. Click on Content, then on My Learning.
  3. At the top of the page, you will see a description of multiple intelligences, their history, and what the intelligences are in detail. When you have completed reading it, click on the Multiple Intelligences link:

  4. You will see a series of questions drop down. Tick all the boxes that are true for you. Answer them as honestly as you can. When you are done, click on Save.
  5. You will see the Learning survey saved notice pop up at the top of the screen. If you click on the multiple intelligences link once again, you will see that all your options have been saved there and can be edited if you wish to do so. Now, you need to display the results, so start creating a new Mahara page.
  6. Click on the Profile tab. Open a page in editing view. You will see that there is a block for multiple intelligences:

  7. Drag the block into your page. In the options, choose a title for the block and select if you want to set a graph color and select the legend type.
  8. You should see your intelligences appear in the page. The following screenshot shows my results. Looks like I've got strong visual-spatial and musical intelligence, but my verbal-linguistic tendencies are non-existent:

What just happened?

You just answered some questions to determine your multiple intelligences and displayed the results in a Mahara page. Now, let's move on to have a look at your learning styles.

Learning styles

There has been a lot of work around the idea of using learning styles to decide how you should plan your learning activities. These can be roughly classified as visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic/tactile. While many have turned to this as a method for matching style to activity, it must be said that its effect on learning is somewhat disputed. Whether you believe in the success of learning styles for guiding learning or not, it's certainly fun to find out what they are.
