Course group roles

There are two types of staff members within Mahara — site staff members and institution staff members. So far in this chapter, you have seen how you can set up an institution staff member, but there is no difference as to what they can do.

You learned that a staff member is allowed to assign course roles to their groups. Let's have a look at the two different sets of roles that you can assign to your group as a staff member or administrator:

  • Standard — Member and Admin: This is the default setup for a group and these are the only roles available to a standard user when setting up a group. Only group member and group administrator roles are allowed under this scheme.
  • Course — Member, Tutor, and Admin: This can be chosen by site staff or administrators when setting up their groups. Notice how there is one extra role under this scheme — group tutor. Later on you will see what a group tutor is able to do in a group with course roles enabled.

Course group roles

Although Susan, the Pennytown Primary institution administrator, has had to set up the new learners for our school, I still have control over my own English Tudor Monarchy group's membership and permissions. This is because I have been set up as a staff member in my school's institution. As I set up this particular controlled membership group myself, I am in complete control of my class' English Tudor Monarchy group and have decided to allow course roles too, so that I can set up some tutors.
