Putting it all together into an assessment process

So far in this chapter, you have seen how powerful institutions, controlled groups, course roles, and page submission can be in providing a bit more control for administrators and staff. You have also seen the basis of a simple assessment process based around learners submitting pages to a controlled or request membership group that has this page submission enabled. Now, let's combine all that you've seen to create an assessment process in Mahara.

First, we'll hear again from Neil from Training for Work.

Neil from Training for Work thinks:

Putting it all together into an assessment process

It is looking great now that Graham has his own institution; he was telling me how he's set up Peter Tooley as a staff member, so that he can create a course, controlled group for his Mech Eng Level 2 course.

As part of the assessment process, I've decided to explore the idea of using the templating feature that I read about earlier in the book to set up some pages, which will be a base for our learners to work from.

Neil is right, the page templating system in Mahara is a great way of creating standard layouts for work to be submitted by all learners.

Of course, a learner could take the template, change it completely, and then submit that completely new set of information. But, depending on the course, they may then be failed for this level of creativity. The decision here is up to the assessor concerned. The important thing is that Mahara believes that a modern learner need not sacrifice his/her right to personalize the presentation of his/her own content, even if it may still remain wise for him/her to follow the conventions suggested by a tutor.

Let's show Mahara in action by devising a full assessment process, including the use of templates and showing how you can involve people external to the Mahara site (such as somebody verifying the standard of the submitted work for an examining body) in the process. The process described works for the UK-centric NVQ delivery example, but is general enough to apply to any qualification that requires work to be submitted for assessment. You can use Mahara to submit work digitally in a similar way to how learners have submitted a paper-based portfolio and worksheet for assessment in the past.
