Giving Commands

OneNote 2007 does not have the Microsoft Office Fluent user interface (most easily identified by the task-based command groupings arranged on the tabs of the Office Fluent Ribbon) adopted by the other programs in the Home and Student edition of the 2007 Microsoft Office system. Commands for working with OneNote and notebook content are available in three areas of the OneNote program window.

Tip

In this book, we display the Standard and Formatting toolbars on separate rows so you can see all their commands at one time. Your toolbar arrangement might look different.

To display or hide a toolbar, right-click anywhere in the toolbar area and then click the toolbar you want to toggle on or off. To move a toolbar, drag it by its move handle (the vertical line of four dots at the left end of the toolbar). You can float a toolbar anywhere on the screen by dragging it over the content pane. To dock a floating toolbar at the top or right edge of the program window, simply double-click its title bar.

  • The menu bar contains commands organized on drop-down menus.

Clicking the Full Page View button at the right end of the menu bar maximizes the content area by hiding the menu bar, the Navigation Bar, and the Page Tabs area, and replacing the currently displayed toolbars with the Full Page View toolbar.

Clicking the active Full Page View button at the left end of the toolbar returns the window to its previous state.

  • The toolbar area displays the active command toolbars. Available toolbars include Standard, Formatting, Audio And Video Recording, Drawing Tools, My Pens, Outlining, Outlook Tasks, Tags, and Writing Tools.

  • The Navigation Bar displays links to open notebooks and notebook sections, and to the Unfiled Notes section. Depending on the size of the program window, your screen resolution, the number of open notebooks, and other factors, the Navigation Bar might not be large enough to display all of the available information. Clicking All Notebooks at the bottom of the Navigation Bar displays the All Notebooks List window, which contains links to each section of each open notebook.

You can minimize the Navigation Bar to a vertical button bar by clicking the Collapse Navigation Bar button in its upper-right corner.

    Note

See Also For information about opening more than one notebook, see the sidebar Working with Multiple Notebooks earlier in this chapter.

Giving some commands in OneNote causes a task pane containing specialized commands to appear on the right side of the program window. You can display the task pane at any time by clicking Task Pane on the View menu or by right-clicking the toolbar area and clicking Task Pane on the context menu. Clicking the Other Task Panes button displays a list of the available task panes.
