Working in the OneNote Program Window

In the same way that the Windows storage structure reflects that of a physical office (with a desktop, folders, and files), the OneNote storage structure reflects a three-ring binder. Each notebook is divided into sections, and each section is divided into pages. If you want to extend the analogy, you can format the page background to resemble various types of ruled paper.

Note

See Also For information about changing the background of a notebook page, see Creating Pages and Sections, in Chapter 14, Chapter 14.

In Windows Explorer, each notebook is represented by a folder in your DocumentsOneNote Notebooks folder. Each section of a notebook is stored as an .one file within the notebook folder. (And if you're wondering—yes, you can move a section between notebooks by moving the .one file between folders.)

When you start OneNote for the first time, the program opens a ready-made notebook. Thereafter, starting the program opens the notebook you worked with in the previous OneNote session.

Information about the active notebook content is available in three areas of the OneNote program window.

  • The content pane in the center of the program window displays the active notebook page.

  • The notebook header above the content pane displays the name of the active notebook and section tabs that you can click to move between sections of the active notebook.

The area at the left end of the notebook header that displays the notebook name has space for only 11 characters. If the notebook name is longer than 11 characters, OneNote displays the first 10 characters of the name followed by an ellipsis (…) to indicate that the entire name does not fit.

  • The Page Tabs area to the right of the content pane displays page tabs you can click to move between pages of the active section. You can shrink the Page Tabs area by clicking the Collapse Page Tabs button in the upper-right corner.

By default, the Page Tabs area displays a tab for each page in the current section. You can filter the tabs to make it easier to locate specific content.
