In addition to rewarding your employees for excellence in performance, it is also important to step back and look at excellence from a different angle, specifically in terms of improved performance. You may have some employees who are showing real signs of improvement, and that calls for recognition.

One way to do this is to designate a special award for the employee who has made the greatest leap forward during the year. When an employee shows real signs of improvement and you want him or her to repeat this positive behavior, you should reinforce it, and that’s exactly what an award for improved performance will do.

You can easily call this the “Most Improved Employee Award,” or you can come up with a catchier name that helps give the award special meaning and significance in your company. For example, you could call it the “V.I.P. Award” for Vastly Improved Performance.
