Voluntary Recognition

You can create enormously meaningful recognition opportunities by encouraging employees to spend some time in volunteer activities. Voluntarism has become so important today that some employers are giving their employees a week or more off with pay so they can do volunteer work in their communities.

Assignment

Contact local community organizations and ask about their needs for volunteers, and ask your employees if there are organizations in which they would like to help. Put together a list of these organizations and encourage your employees to volunteer at least a few hours per quarter. You can have a special reward for the employees who put in the most volunteer hours during the year.

Volunteers are gladly welcomed in a broad range of organizations and institutions such as homeless shelters, schools, youth programs, community clean-up programs, home building programs, hospitals, crisis centers, and many more. The work that volunteers carry out in these settings is intrinsically rewarding as a result of the deep sense of satisfaction associated with helping those who need a hand. At the same time, this work is extrinsically rewarding because these volunteers are often singled out for recognition not only when their projects come to an end, but at several points along the way.

When you encourage your employees to do volunteer work, you are opening the door for them to ascend to totally new levels of achievement, responsibility, and recognition.
