When employees move into an office or from one office to another, they often inherit whatever art happens to be on the walls. In order to generate the full range of recognition associated with this type of move, employees should be provided with an opportunity to select the artwork for their walls. This does not necessarily mean that they can hang whatever they want, but they should at least be able to make their own selections from a booklet of approved art.

Assignment

Assemble a booklet of at least 100 reproductions that are suitable for your employees’ office walls. Whenever employees are moved into a new or different office, they should be given the booklet and the freedom to select whatever they want. Check also with your current officeholders to see how they feel about the art on their walls, and have the booklet ready for them, too.

While art on the walls is not going to motivate your employees, it does have the potential to annoy, distract, and bother them. You can easily solve this problem with the art booklet. By letting your employees have more control over the look of the area in which they will spend most of their waking hours, you are providing visual recognition of their judgment, taste, and independence.

Epilogue

When employees are given the opportunities to select artwork for their walls, their entire employment picture improves.
