Configuring Persistent Chat Server Pools

When Persistent Chat is being configured for high-availability or disaster recovery, a single pool is created regardless of the physical location of the servers. Defining a Persistent Chat pool is a simple process, and is completed in the Topology Builder. These are the steps to follow:

1. While in Topology Builder, expand Lync Server 2013. Right-click on the Persistent Chat Pools node and choose New Persistent Chat Pool.

2. Select Multiple Computer Pool and specify the pool FQDN, such as chatpool.companyabc.com. Click Next. See Figure 15.11 for an example of how this configuration should look in Topology Builder.

3. On the Define the Computers in This Pool page, specify the FQDN of each computer in the pool and click Add. Click Next. Figure 15.12 provides an example of how the defining members configuration should look in Topology Builder.

4. On the Define Properties of the Persistent Chat Pool page, specify a Display Name. This name can be anything, and is mainly used for administrative purposes.

5. Specify a Persistent Chat Port (the default is 5041). There should be no reason to change this port number.

6. If compliance is required, check the box to Enable Compliance on the pool.

7. If you plan to provide disaster recovery through a backup SQL Server store using SQL Log Shipping, check the box Use Backup SQL Server Stores to Enable Disaster Recovery.

8. If you want to make this Persistent Chat pool the default for any or all sites, check the remaining boxes as they apply. Figure 15.13 provides an overview of the Persistent Chat properties configuration in Topology Builder.

9. Complete the remaining steps for the Persistent Chat pool and publish the topology. For complete details on this process, see Chapter 10, “Persistent Chat.”
