Summary

Mobile functionality is key to providing a true Unified Communications Solution. Lync Server 2013 provides users mobile access across all platforms with a consistent and intuitive user experience. New services have been designed to support mobile devices, including the MCX service for Lync 2010 clients, and the Unified Communications Web API service for Lync 2013 clients. These services act as critical intermediary points between the Lync mobile clients that communicate in XML messages over the HTTPS protocol, and the Lync Server Services that communicate in SIP over the TLS protocol. Providing a simple experience for end users on a mobile device is also critical. The LyncDiscover service enables mobile devices to automatically discover critical Lync services, resulting in a seamless automatic configuration of clients.

Deploying Lync Mobility to a Lync Server 2013 deployment introduces unique DNS and certificate requirements, and must be carefully planned for. After these requirements have been identified and met, the actual deployment of the services is a relatively simple process. Also, controlling the Lync Mobile Services and functionality available to end users is available in a few key policies, all controllable through the Lync Server Management Shell and the Lync Control Panel.
