Troubleshooting

As with any migration, there’s a lot that can go wrong regardless of how well you’ve planned. The biggest item to check is ensuring that Active Directory is healthy and functioning properly. A close second is ensuring that all the required manual DNS changes have been made and that DNS is working flawlessly. Of course, there are the firewall ACLs that need to be in place for the new Lync Server 2013 Edge Server as well. The added convenience of the Deployment Wizard doesn’t lessen the importance of certificates. They are still core to all server and server-client communications.

Be sure to check the various log files that are created. It’s great news that nearly every action, whether done in the Lync Control Panel or the Lync Management Shell, creates a detailed XML log file in the Windows temp directory. Administrators should review these files regularly to gain insight into their deployment and understand any errors that occur. The Lync Server event log is also a good place to check for errors. From the Start menu select Administrative Tools and then Event Viewer. Expand the Applications and Services Logs item and select Lync Server. All events related to Lync Server functions reside here. Often the error description is enough to identify the problem and make clear the resolution.
