Unified Messaging Voice Mail Integration

Exchange Unified Messaging (UM) is an optional Exchange 2013 component that serves as an integrated voice mail system for Exchange mailbox users. Exchange UM allows voice mail, email, and fax messages to be consolidated into a user’s inbox, and provides additional features to enhance the UC experience, such as Outlook Voice Access and automated attendants. Although Exchange UM certainly adds to the UC experience for users of Microsoft Exchange, it provides even more value when configured for integration with Lync. The integration of Lync with Exchange UM enables users to view and manage voice mails directly from the Lync client, providing additional flexibility and efficiency in terms of how the various forms of communication are handled.

Note

Microsoft has made several architectural changes to Unified Messaging in Exchange 2013. With previous versions of the product, UM was a unique server role requiring dedicated hardware. With Exchange 2013, the UM components are split between the Client Access Server and the Mailbox Server roles. Essentially, the Client Access Server acts as a proxy for incoming calls using the Unified Messaging Call Router service, whereas the Mailbox Server handles the majority of the voice load by way of the Unified Messaging service. However, these server roles can also be collocated, such that both the front-end and backend UM services are hosted on a single system.
