File Share High-Availability

Microsoft recommends deploying file servers configured with Distributed File System (DFS) to provide high-availability of Lync Server file shares. DFS has been tested to support failover between file servers in the same datacenter. Although DFS itself can support replication across multiple sites, for Lync it is recommended that DFS be used only for redundancy in the site.

RTO and RPO for File Share DFS

DFS is considered best-effort for file replication. Because of this, there is no published RTO objective or RPO commitment. The failover tends to happen quickly, but data replication can prevent a seamless transition. The Lync file share is used for address-book data, as well as conferencing data that is uploaded. Therefore, many organizations are not as concerned with the RPO of the system, but it is important that the file share be active for general user experience.

It is recommended to back up the DFS file shares frequently. This will prevent data loss if replication has not completed in the time frame of a server failure. For an overview of how DFS can be used to provide high-availability, see Figure 15.2.
