Creating a Notebook for Use on One Computer

The simplest OneNote notebook structure, created by the blank notebook template, consists of one section containing one page—an .one file contained in a folder. You can add content to a blank notebook (also known as populating the notebook) and then organize it into pages and sections, or you can create an organizational structure and then populate it. The best method will vary depending on the way you plan to use the notebook—whether you are working on a highly structured project or collecting a wide variety of information.

When you want to start by creating the organizational structure, you might find it convenient to base a new notebook on one of the eight specialized notebook templates that come with OneNote 2007:

  • Clients Notebook. This notebook template includes three Client sections and an Open Issues section.

  • Personal Notebook. This notebook template includes Personal Information; Shopping; Books, Movies, And Music; Travel; Recipes; To Do; and Miscellaneous sections.

  • Professional Services Notebook. This notebook template includes Proposals, Meeting And Call Notes, Research And Analysis, Report And Client Deliverables, and Business Administration sections.

  • Research Notebook. This notebook template includes two Paper sections and To Do, Meetings, Readings, Data Collection, and Brainstorm sections.

  • Shared Notebook – Group Project. This notebook template includes Meeting Notes, Goals And Schedule, Drafts, Tasks And Issues, Research, and Team Information sections.

  • Shared Notebook – Reference Materials. This notebook template includes three Topic sections and Team Information, Tools, and Links sections.

  • Student Semester Notebook. This notebook template includes three Class sections, two Project sections, and To Do and Student Club sections.

  • Work Notebook. This notebook template includes two Project sections and Meeting Notes, Research, Travel, Planning, and Miscellaneous sections.

The sections and pages created by these templates contain tips and ideas intended to help you use the notebook effectively. Additional notebook templates available from Microsoft Office Online are designed to help facilitate a variety of situations, such as planning a landscape project or a wedding, house hunting or moving, and various legal situations.

In this exercise, you will create a research notebook for use on only one computer. We encourage you to repeat this exercise with other notebook templates, to gain more insight into the options provided by OneNote.
