User Management with a Hybrid Deployment

The procedures used to create and manage user accounts with a hybrid deployment are different from a cloud-only deployment in several ways, and should therefore be taken into account when planning the hybrid deployment. After directory synchronization is enabled for a domain, updates and changes to the user accounts must be made using the on-premise tools only. This means that for any new user account that will be a Lync Online user, the account must first be created in the on-premise Active Directory, and then synchronized to Lync Online/Office 365. If a user account is instead created in Lync Online/Office 365 using the online portal, the account will not be synchronized with the on-premise Active Directory. After the account is created, the user can be moved from the on-premise Lync pool to the Lync Online/Office 365 tenant.

The following limitations and considerations should also be taken into account for user accounts that are moved from the on-premise pool to Lync Online:

• User contact lists, groups, and ACLs are migrated with the user account when an on-premise user is moved to Lync Online. However, the limit for user contacts in Lync Online is 50. When an on-premise user is moved to Lync Online, any contacts beyond 50 are removed from the user’s contact list.

• Conferencing data, meeting content, and scheduled meetings are not migrated with the user account when moved to Lync Online. Users must reschedule meetings after their accounts are migrated to Lync Online.

• Users can be enabled for IM, voice, and meetings either on-premise or in Lync Online, but not both simultaneously.
