Edge Traversal

The DMA does not support Lync Edge Server connectivity, so calls between remote Lync clients and DMA endpoints must be performed on the internal network.

The B2BUA works only for calls within the internal network by default, but can be configured to communicate with the Lync Edge Server in order to relay traffic for remote users. This capability works only with the B2BUA mode, and requires an OCS Enhanced Collaboration key to be loaded on the VCS control system.

The Edge traversal is achieved by providing a username and password that is already provisioned for Lync, or specifically provisioned to provide Edge connectivity in to VCS. This username will register to Lync, receive Media Relay Authentication Service (MRAS) credentials, and then be used to support calls between Lync users and internal or remote endpoints registered to VCS.

Note

Organizations can also deploy a Cisco VCS Expressway (VCSe), which provides media relay capabilities for remote endpoints and operates similarly to a Lync Edge Server. It is possible for a remote Lync client to connect to the VCSe as part of the media path.
