Chapter 9. Director

The Microsoft Lync Server 2013 Director role has been a part of the Lync Server product ever since Live Lync Server 2005, Service Pack 1, but has typically been one of the least deployed server roles. Over the years the Director has typically been a recommended server role, but Microsoft has adjusted Lync Server 2013 so that the Director is now an optional role, and has removed it from the reference architecture with multiple pools.

This chapter focuses on the Director role and how it interacts with other components of Lync Server 2013. The benefits of a Director are explained both from an internal perspective and from an external viewpoint where it adds a degree of security and stability to the environment.

This chapter also discusses the steps required to prepare a server for the Director role and how to actually install a Director in the environment. The components of a Director role are examined, and guidelines for troubleshooting common issues with a Director are provided for reference.
