THE HELPER’S CONTRIBUTION— INTERPERSONAL PROCESSING
The basic tenet of the Age of Information is interdependency. This means that we are each dependent upon the other. In this context, the basic helping skills in the Age of Information remain the interpersonal processing skills or helping skills. They enable a person to relate to the experiences of others. Helping skills or interpersonal processing skills facilitate the intrapersonal processing of others.
Interpersonal processing skills include attending skills to involve the helpees in the helping process. Responding skills facilitate exploring by the helpees. Personalizing skills facilitate understanding by the helpees. Initiating skills stimulate acting by the helpees. Feedback from the helpees’ actions recycles the phases of intrapersonal and interpersonal processing.
