EXERCISE 34
Visit a local church or other architectural landmark with a strong geometric
presence. Using colored pencils, draw the structure of the church. Don’t
hesitate to indicate the geometry of the shapes, and look at how one shape
supports the other.
Once you have your basic shapes completed in your drawing, you can add
the color. Be a little wild, as Eddie has done here, and play with colors that
feel right as opposed to ones that represent the color you see. It might be nice
to add a few people as well, for scale.

Israeli Memoirs
“Here is a collage I did two summers ago during a trip to Israel. I began
it on the spot and completed it in my hotel room. It was done during a
visit to the Western Wall, otherwise known as the ‘Wailing Wall,’ in the
Old City of Jerusalem. The experience was a lifetime dream realized,
and truly beyond words.” —Michele

EXERCISE 35
This is an on-location exercise. Find a local monument or public place where
people gather. Prepare some paper before you go; take several pieces of
watercolor paper, and paint on them. Be expressionistic—let the different
colors bleed together, splash some paint around, use your Caran d’Ache
crayons for additional texture.
On location, cut the papers into shapes that represent the place you’re at,
and assemble a panoramic picture with it. Using your Caran d’Ache crayon,
or a thin brush with drier pigment on it, add details, and create the linear
people to complete the scene.
