DAY 18
“I recently tried Pilates—almost threw my back out! But it was fun to be at
the gym, painting all the people doing their various exercises. That’s a
workout I like!” —Margaret

EXERCISE 18
Choose just one color, and use it to create silhouettes of
people in motion. A gym would be a great place to do this;
so would a dance class. A group of children playing could
work, too.
Look at the shapes of the figure—obviously if people are
moving, it’s not the easiest thing to get down on paper, so
trust your memory, and keep painting the shape even after the
person has moved to another position. This is great practice.
Don’t judge your early efforts too much; visual memory is
something that gets developed over time. Just doing it is the
most important thing.

DAY 19
EXERCISE 19
This is about using the flow of a brush to
show movement. Go to a place where you
can observe people doing some kind of
repetitive movements: could be people
bowling, dancing, jogging by, as long as
you can see the action. While watching the
people, take your brush, full of color, and
follow their movements with your painting.
You can add details such as the feet after
the brushstroke dries, or simply let this be
an abstract study of movement and
calligraphy.

Bowling
“Okay, I’ve discovered that I am kind of terrible at bowling. Here’s a look at the
difference between how I bowl and how my good friend Nadia bowls. She is so
graceful and almost looks like she’s dancing out there. I, on the other hand, am so
uncoordinated and just . . . well . . . I look like a mess!” —Despina
