EXERCISE 31
Line and color: a beautiful combination! For this exercise,
you’ll need a dip pen and waterproof black ink or a
waterproof razor-point pen, plus your watercolors, of course.
Get to a high place in an urban or town setting: a rooftop, a
restaurant or café on a high floor with windows, a bridge,
and so on. (If you live in a more rural setting without access
to a cityscape, you could do this exercise by working with an
aerial photograph of an urban area.)
Using black line, make a drawing of the view before you.
Add as much or as little detail as you want, but do include a
few details such as windows, as Eddie has done. Leave some
areas open to add detail later with watercolor. Once the
drawing has dried, use your paints to fill in the color, almost
like a coloring book. Definitely play with the amount of
colors you put down, and vary the concentration of the
pigment, so you’ll have a range of hues and values. Once the
paint has dried, add some color details, like the bricks at left,
using your paint in a much drier state. Darker details over
lighter colors work best; if you want to put a light-colored
detail over a darker area, switch to your gouache medium,
which is more opaque.
