EXERCISE 11
Today’s exercise is about painting beautiful flowers. Either
from nature, in a park, or cut in a vase, find some flower
blossoms that have colors you’re dying to paint. Work a few
shades of various colors—a grouping of reds, pinks, and
oranges, for example, and then add the complement. In this
case, Margaret has worked with reds and pinks, with blues
and greens for contrast.
Paint each petal one by one, and let them dry. Once they
are dry, you can add a bit of line with your Caran d’Ache
crayons and put a background color down to complete the
picture. Pencil in a rough shape of the flowers first if it helps,
and use a colored pencil to draw some details once the paint
is dry.
TIP
• Try to keep the petal shapes from touching each other too
much, or they will bleed together, and you will lose the
overallshapeoftheower.Youcouldalsotryputtingafull

petal shapes over that once it’s dry. You can see that
technique used in Marg’s smaller paintings at right.
