“One of the wonderful things about being an American born to Greek parents
is that my childhood is full of lovely memories of trips to Greece to visit
family. Trips that I continue to take as an adult. One of the less-wonderful
things is that with so much family to visit, there isn’t always as much time to
paint as I’d like. I was really happy with this simple landscape painting I did
on location in Athens. I only had a few minutes, so I used a minimal color
palette and bold, expressive strokes. Captures the feeling I wanted very well,
even if I do say so myself!” —Despina
EXERCISE 12
This is a landscape on the go—choose a spot you’d like to paint, and give
yourself no more than 15 minutes to finish the exercise. Select a color
palette that makes sense, and ignore details in favor of large shapes, to
create a landscape with bold strokes. Pick out important information that
can identify the scene: a specific tree or architectural structure, for example.
You might even do this from the passenger seat of a car while a friend
drives! This is a mix between painting and calligraphy and a good way to
start our landscape chapter.
