EXERCISE 28
Create a painting to show the universe in your own garden!
First, paint a very loose background of color. The base of the
painting at left is simply yellow and green color allowed to
mix in the center. Once the paint dries, use colored pencil and
crayon to draw leaves, flowers, etc. Next, scan the art and use
a digital drawing tool, or the mouse, to create finer line draw-
ings of of leaves and flowers on top. The ladybugs were drawn
with a digital black line and filled in with red, using the paint
bucket tool. Play around to see what effects you get. If you
don’t have access to a computer, create the painting for this
exercise with watercolor, colored pencils, and gouache.

“I’ve been experimenting with ‘watercolor’ paintings on the iPad. It’s a lot
less messy for sure, and it’s interesting for me to get to know a new medium.
Did a still life, and some fruits and vegetables to start, and then went over
to the Turtle Back Zoo and decided to paint a few birds. I couldn’t help but
paint the ostrich in a comical way—they are so goofy looking!
I’m thinking I can use this new app for all kinds of illustrations; it’s really a

EXERCISE 29
Use your iPad with the Auryn Ink app to paint some digital watercolor
paintings. Keep it simple at first; you could do a few fruits and vegetables
around the house, or go to the zoo and paint some animals, as Despina
did here.
Notice the way she layered the color in the animal paintings, putting big
descriptive shapes down for their bodies, and then using a “dry” brush to
add marks for the feathers and other details.
If you don’t have access to an iPad or iPhone, you could go to the zoo
and make some traditional watercolor paintings of the animals using a
similar approach.
