Making Notes

Notes is a nifty little app for putting your thoughts to “paper” (the digital kind, that is). Do you need to put a grocery list together? Notes is your tool. Maybe you just thought of the title and synopsis of the next great bestselling novel? Notes has your back. Notes has been around on the iPhone since its inception, so if you are an iPhone or iPad aficionado you will feel instantly comfortable with Notes for Mac.

Notes is all about jotting stuff down, so let’s see how to get started in doing just that.

From the Finder, press maccmd+Shift+A to open the Applications folder, and double-click the Notes icon to launch the Notes app, or simply click the Notes icon in the Dock (if it’s there). Once the Notes window (shown in Figure 8.20) is open, beginning a new note couldn’t be any simpler: just start typing.

8.20 Notes is ready for plenty of note-taking action!

Creating additional new notes is as simple as beginning the first one: Click the + button in the lower-left corner of the Notes window and start typing. Your first note can still be hanging out in the sidebar on the left side of the window. If you want to get back to it, or any other note, simply select it in the sidebar. The search field at the top of the sidebar is a great help when your list of notes gets too long to quickly browse. You can also add pictures to your notes by dragging and dropping them right into the note.

If you want to change the fonts, align the text, or add bullets to a list, use the selections found in the Format menu.

You can organize your notes into folders:

1. Choose ViewShow Folders List to expand the sidebar.

2. Choose FileNew Folder to create a new folder in the sidebar. Give the folder a descriptive name.

3. Drag notes from the Notes list into the folder in which you want it to reside.

If you are logged into iCloud (check System Preferences→iCloud if you aren’t certain), Notes will automatically sync your notes with it. Contacts, Calendars, and Reminders are auto-synced, as well.

After a note has outlived its purpose, it’s time to delete it. Again, simple enough: Open the doomed note, click the Trash icon (looks like a little trash can) at the bottom of the page, and click the Delete Note button.

Like other apps in Mountain Lion, Notes is nice about sharing with others. To share your thoughts, click the Sharing button at the bottom of the page and select Email or Message.
